About the portal

The SK-NIC auction system is a portal where it is possible to obtain the right to register unique .sk domains through an auction. It is managed by SK-NIC, a.s., which is also the administrator of the top-level domain .sk.

For proper access to the functions of the Auction System, it is necessary to create an account and log in. Without logging in to the portal, its functions are significantly limited.

More about the system administrator and his contact details can be found in the contact section.

How it works

Domain auctions are held through the SK-NIC auction system, in which it is possible to obtain the right to register them. The right does not mean the domain registration itself, for that it is necessary to contact any registrar of .sk domains and do it through him. You can find the list of .sk domain registrars here.

If you are interested in getting domains in the priority phase before the auction thanks to the trademark, see the relevant page.

Domains available for auction are visible in the auction listings. A basic view of ongoing auctions can be seen even without the given user being logged in.

Participation in the auction

However, in order to bid in the auction, it is already necessary to log in, for which you must create an account. Before that, however, see the Conditions for releasing 1-, 2- and 3-character prohibited .sk domains for registration (hereinafter referred to as “Conditions”), especially the conditions for creating an account.

By creating an account, you become an active user of the auction system and can bid on any domain in the offer, track it, receive notifications, pay winnings, and so on.

To participate in the auction, you must have sufficient funds in your account to cover the so-called auction collateral. It is currently EUR 500.

Funds can be added by online transfer through a bank account or credit card – there is a specific function for this in the auction system, so there is no need to worry about bank details. We recommend adding a reasonably large amount, small (euro) amounts may incur unnecessary bank or administrative fees.

How to bid

In the auction itself, it is enough to match the starting price or “switch” another auction participant for the minimum submission amount and that’s it. You can also set the so-called a “automatic bidding function” that will automatically bid for you up to the maximum amount you specify.

The auction runs until its end date. But don’t forget that someone can throw in at the last minute!

The starting price of unique 1-, 2- and 3-character .sk domains differs:

  • for 2-character .sk domains it is EUR 1000 (without VAT),
  • for 1-character non-numeric .sk domains it is EUR 1500 (without VAT),
  • and for 1-character numeric and more than 2-character .sk domains it is EUR 2000 (without VAT).

When the domains appear in the auction

Domains are added to auctions in groups once a month, usually on the 15th day of the month (except December 2024).

The first group is planned from November 15, 2024. The auction lasts 7 days, so there is plenty of time to see what interesting domains are currently on offer.

The entire list of unique .sk domains that will be released according to the Terms and Conditions is available on the relevant page.

Auction deposit

You can bid on any number of domains that are active in the auction. However, do not forget that the system will block the auction security from your account credit for each of your active auctions, until the end of the auction. This means that you must have “enough credit” in the system for multiple auctions. If you win the auction, the deposit will be deducted directly from the winning amount. If you are not successful, the deposit will be returned as a credit to your account.

After winning the auction, follow the instructions sent to your e-mail entered in the auction system.

Attention – the holder to whom the domain won in the auction is subsequently registered must have identical data as the winner in the auction system. However, this does not limit the later transfer to another domain holder.

Payment and registration of the won domain

Important: Do not forget that you are entitled to the won domain for 14 days. Until then, you must pay the amount for which you auctioned it. Failure to do so will void your winnings.

After paying the amount, you then have 1 month, i.e. 30 days, to choose a Registrar (you can find a list of .sk domain registrars here) and register the winning domain. If you do not do so, you will lose your right forever.

That’s all. Feel free to browse the domains for auction and don’t forget that a good domain is like a high-quality piece of land – it increases significantly in value over time.

Dates and deadlines

The priority right phase for trademark holders in the release of 1-, 2- and 3-character .sk domains begins on October 1, 2024. In the event that several persons are interested in the same domain, a private auction will take place between them. More about this phase on the relevant page.

The first public auctions will be launched on November 15, 2024. The first group of .sk domains will be released for the auctions, which will also be determined by SK-NIC according to the results of the priority right phase. The next group will be released on January 15, 2025, and then every other 15th until SK-NIC decides. respectively release of all unique .sk domains in the list for auctions.

The domain auction lasts 7 calendar days (the private auction in the priority phase will last 3 calendar days).

The winner of the auction must pay the fee within 14 calendar days at the latest.

Claiming the right to register the won domain – that is, registering the domain through the chosen registrar – must be done by the winner within 30 calendar days at the latest.
