The year 2025: what we’ve accomplished (and the internet has survived)
2025 was another busy year for us – and yes, for our keyboards too.
In addition to keeping the .sk domain stable and secure (which is good news for anyone who doesn’t want its internet to go down more often than its New Year’s resolutions), we also got busy with a number of other activities.
Simply put: we supported Slovakia – both virtually and in real life. And we did it on three proven pillars: security, support, and education. And… they didn’t collapse.
Numbers, graphs and statistics (yes, they have their fans too)
We kicked off the year with statistics and expert insights into how Slovakia is behaving online. In February, we published the Annual Report on the Internet in Slovakia, which mapped trends, user behavior, and why some people still use the “1234” password.
Internet securitya was a topic that carried with us throughout the year – because the internet is a great place, but only as long as you are careful about what you click on. Take a look at this video “SMS scams”, for example.
We supported fine ideas (and there were plenty of them)
Through the SK-NIC Fund, we have once again opened a call for support for smaller projects that responded to the current needs of the digital society – from online security increase to development of digital skills.
The result?
This wasthe tenth call and we have supported 152 projects altogether in all calls! We invested more than 1.8 million euros in meaningful ideas and supported many people who make the internet a better place. You can easily find all the ideas on Virtuálnô.sk.
We see the SK-NIC Fund as one of the main ways to give something back to the digital world. That’s why we always publicly present the winning projects of each call. So that individual project creators can get to know each other, exchange opinions and experience, and network between themselves. And we love doing it.
We educated (because a wise user = a safer and better used internet)
We take education seriously – but not in a boring way.
In April, we partnered with the JA Slovakia Business Talent Fair and throughout the year we have trained teachers and students across Slovakia. We talked about online business, digital identity and how to behave responsibly on the internet.
We believe that prevention is better than to try to solve problems after click on a “miracle win”.
We connected people and experience
Autumn was all about sharing experience and learning. We organized the traditional Registrars Day, focused on marketing, sales, and strategic development of domain services.
At the end of the year, we added a seminar dedicated to cybersecurity and the legislation that comes with it – because while laws are not a thriller, it is good to understand them.
We also helped offline (yes, there is a world without Wi-Fi)
The internet is our home, but we don’t forget about the real one either.
In 2025, we supported the planting of yet more trees – not only financially, but also with our own hands. Together, we have already helped to plant 162,000 trees. The internet may grow fast, but trees take a while.
We also participated in volunteer activities as the one named Our City, where we have pro bono helped to selected organizations.
We were where the internet is being handled
We have participated in meetings and conferences of working groups of the CENTR organization, the global organization ICANN, and the Europian TLD ISAC security groups.
In this way, we confirm that Slovakia has a firm place at the table in the European and global domain community.
“Our role does not end with the technical administration of the .sk domain. We devote a lot of time to developing the environment around the Internet, bringing and supporting good ideas, but also overall security,” says Peter Bíro, CEO of SK-NIC.
Auctions that entertained the internet
Our year 2025 was most notably shaped by auctions of unique one- and two-character .sk domains.
During the year, we organized 9 auction rounds and domains such as a.sk, ba.sk, 1.sk, tv.sk and mu.sk found their new owners.
